Hand lettering

I’ve always loved typography and hand lettering.  So when my friend Antoana (from Antoana Oreški Illustration ) asked me if I would take an online hand lettering class with her, of course the answer would be yes!  I had never heard of the site SkillShare, but what a terrific idea. There are lists of creative classes you can take online. The prices are more than reasonable, and the whole point is just self growth (which I’ve said before it’s SO very important for artist to continue to grow and expand their skills).

This class is being taught by Mary Kate McDevitt, who’s done hand lettering work for many companies and publications. Check out her website here, (warning, lots of eye candy for your typography lovers!)

We have to choose a quote, sentence or expression that we like and start from scratch, doing brainstorming, practice lettering, thumbnails for composition, clean roughs, final art… So I thought I would share my progress here.

I chose the quote “Make it So” ~ Captain Picard Star Trek TNG.  I am a huge Star Trek nerd and any excuse to delve into the world of Star Trek is good enough for me!

After brainstorming i went on Pinterest and started to create a reference or moodboard for my project.

Than I started practicing my words using different styles just to play and explore a little. At this point I still didn’t know what I wanted to do.

After this I started doing thumbnails to come up with a concept for a layout…

and from here, once I had an idea of the layout (still no real idea on the type yet!) I did a couple clean roughs

#1  rough #1

#2  rough #2

#3  rough #3

#4  rough #4

That’s all I have so far! I am leaning towards rough #3, I will show the final art as soon as it’s done!

    1. Thank you! It has been, the think I love best about it is it’s really marrying my love of design will illustration. and I am really impressed with the SkillShare page, so many tempting classes put out by very talented people. What a terrific concept!

    1. thank you! I am having so much fun with it, I am working on the final inked version today, and I have a couple other quotes rolling around in my brain, this is so addictive 🙂
